Know Barbie?


Most of girls love Barbie doll.  It's the impress doll of girls.  Barbie is the fashion doll manufactured by Mattel, Inc. from U.S.A.  Mrs. Ruth Mosko Handler is creation of this doll.  Handler has been the inspiration of the invention "Barbie". When she noticed her daugther Barbara at play with paper dolls and noticed that she often enjoyed giving them adult roles.  Later, when Handler to Europe in 1956 with Barbara and Kenneth, she was eye-catching with the "Bild Lilli" doll of German. The Lilli doll was first sold in Germany in 1955.  She purchased three of them and gave one to her daugther and took the others back to Mattel.  After, she back to the United States, Handler reworked the design of the doll and the doll was given a new name, "Barbie".  After Handler's daughter Barbara.  The doll made its debut at the American International Toy Fair in NY on March 9th, 1959.  This date is also used as Barbie's official birthday.  When Barbie was first introduced she had a black and white swimsuit and her hair style was either blonde or brunette in a pony tail with bangs. Other unique features for this first Barbie include eyes with white irises, blue eyeliner, and arched eyebrows.

Barbie is the figurehead of a brand of Mattel dolls and accessories, including other family members and collectible dolls. Barbie has been an important part of the toy fashion doll market for fifty years, and has been the subject of numerous controversies and lawsuits, often involving parody of the doll and her lifestyle.  The Barbie doll has changed over the years. Her hair style, fashions, and make up have changed to reflect the current trends in fashion. This makes collecting Barbie dolls an interesting study of fashion history over the last 60 years. Totally Hair Barbie had really long hair that reached all the way down to her feet.

After Barbie grew in popularity, Mattel introduced the Ken doll in 1961, named for the Handler's son. Ken was followed by Midge in 1963, then Skipper in 1965 and Christie, an African-American doll, in 1968. A younger sister was introduced in 1995 as Baby Sister Kelly. Now, Barbie has friends of all ethnicities, ages and lifestyles. There are even mermaid Barbies, American Idol Barbies, Detective Barbies and look-alike Barbies.  The classic Barbie Doll is now considered to be a rare collector's item and can be worth thousands of dollars if it is still in prime condition. There are also more recent Barbies that came out as limited editions and are now worth hundreds of dollars like the Happy Holiday Barbie or the Pink Splendor Barbie. These dolls are valued higher if they come in the original packaging. The dolls are also available to view in museums like the Strong Museum in Rochester, New York.
